NF2 or the full name Neurofibromatosis type 2 is a genetic defect which i (Claire) have which causes benign tumors to grow on nerves around my body. And deafness. There is no cure for this defect only treatment which so far has been operations to remove the tumours. I was first diagnosed in October 2002 and since January 2004 i've had 5 operations, 4 of which were to remove tumors. The first op was in January 2004 to remove some tumuors from my spinal cord. The 2nd op was August 2004 to remove a large tumour from the top of my right hand. The 3rd was to remove tumors from the hearing and balance nerve and facial nerve in my head which left me with facial paralysis on the right side because they removed some of the facial nerve.. Also when i had this op done i had an ABI fitted. The 4th op which was in May 2006 was to connect what was left of the facial nerve up to the nerve that controls the tongue, so in time i will get some movement back in my face. And the last op was an emergancy op which was done in June 2006 to remove a tumor that had been growing on my brain, it has started to cause problems so my surgeon had me rushed in to keep an eye on me. At the end of June 2006 i had the tumor removed. I'm still recovering from that op. I've got short-term memory loss which has got better since the op. I was meant to have an op next month but they have put it on hold. I'm to see a spinal specialist soon. Then they'll decide what to do.
